On February 14, 2025, the Community Service & Reentry Division's Homeless Outreach Proactive Enforcement Team (H.O.P.E.) carried out "Operation Shelter Me" in Apple Valley and nearby areas. The operation aimed to connect with unhoused residents and provide them with housing, medical, and mental health services. The team particularly focused on individuals with significant mental illnesses to link them to restorative mental health pathways.

During the operation, the H.O.P.E. Team identified 34 individuals experiencing homelessness. Of these, 23 received referrals to assistance programs, while seven were connected with follow-up professional services.

San Bernardino County adopted Laura's Law in June 2023, allowing for court-ordered community treatment for individuals with histories of hospitalization, incarceration, or violence. Two individuals identified as candidates for assisted outpatient treatment were contacted during this operation.

The H.O.P.E. Team plans to continue similar operations across the county over the next year using "Community Concerns" funding approved by the County Board of Supervisors. This funding enables the Sheriff's Department to address issues such as homelessness and mental illness.

For those aware of individuals experiencing homelessness who need services, contact the H.O.P.E. Team at 909-387-0623 or [email protected].
