On January 5, 2025, deputies from the Morongo Basin Sheriff Station responded to an emergency call at Hi Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree. A woman with severe injuries was brought into the emergency room by her husband, Carlos Zamudio, who also had facial injuries. Despite efforts to save her life, Savannah Encke was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Sheriff's Specialized Investigations Division's Homicide Detail took over the investigation. It was determined that Carlos Zamudio was responsible for causing the injuries that led to his wife's death. He has been arrested and charged with murder under PC 187 and is currently held at Morongo jail.
