On January 3, 2025, the Community Service & Reentry Division's Homeless Outreach Proactive Enforcement Team (H.O.P.E.) conducted "Operation Shelter Me" in unincorporated Fontana and nearby areas. The operation aimed to connect unhoused residents with housing, medical, and mental health services. Special attention was given to individuals with significant mental illnesses to link them to restorative mental health pathways.
During the operation, the H.O.P.E. Team identified 45 individuals experiencing homelessness. Out of these, 42 received referrals to assistance programs, and nine were assisted with follow-up professional services.
In June 2023, San Bernardino County adopted Laura’s Law or Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT), which allows for court-ordered community treatment for those with histories of hospitalization, incarceration, or violence. However, no individuals were identified as candidates for AOT during this operation.
The H.O.P.E. Team plans to continue similar operations across the county over the next year using "Community Concerns" funding. This funding was approved by the County Board of Supervisors to address issues such as homelessness and mental illness.
For those aware of individuals experiencing homelessness who need services, contact the H.O.P.E. Team at 909-387-0623 or [email protected].
