Between January 13 and January 19, 2025, law enforcement agencies in San Bernardino County conducted a series of targeted crime suppression efforts under the initiative known as Operation Consequences. This operation involved investigators from the Sheriff’s Gangs/Narcotics Division, Specialized Enforcement Division, and various patrol stations. Personnel from the California Highway Patrol, San Bernardino County Probation, Barstow Police Department, Upland Police Department, Rialto Police Department, Montclair Police Department, Ontario Police Department, and Department of Homeland Security Investigations also participated.
During this week-long operation focused on Fontana and surrounding communities on January 17, seven search warrants were executed across San Bernardino, Rialto, Fontana, Colton, and Bloomington. The authorities contacted gang members and individuals prohibited from possessing firearms. As a result of these actions, 59 arrests were made. Additionally, 13 firearms were seized—two of which were ghost guns—and illegal narcotics were recovered.
This operation followed the passage of Proposition 36 by California voters on November 5, 2024. Titled “The Homelessness, Drug Addiction and Theft Reduction Act,” this proposition came into effect on December 18, 2024. It reforms several laws from Proposition 47 to address issues such as homelessness and drug addiction. The new regulations allow deputies to apply enhanced charges during arrests that can prevent offenders from being released before their court appearance. Proposition 36 was applicable in seven of the arrests made during Operation Consequences.
Funding for these county-wide crime suppression activities was authorized by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors with the aim to enhance law enforcement services related to quality-of-life issues affecting local communities.
Operation Consequences will continue over several months with a focus on conducting targeted crime suppression operations along with parole and probation checks in the High Desert area and around San Bernardino city. The goal is to curb violent crime by disrupting criminal street gangs and apprehending individuals involved in illegal firearm activities.
