Between January 4 and January 17, 2025, a retail theft operation named "Operation Smash & Grab" was conducted in San Bernardino County. The effort involved several agencies, including the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department's Gangs/Narcotics Division, Rancho Cucamonga Station, San Bernardino County Probation Department, Homeland Security Investigations, California Highway Patrol, and the San Bernardino Police Department.

The operation resulted in 16 felony arrests and eight misdemeanor arrests. Additionally, $2,933 worth of property was recovered during this period.

Concerns over rising thefts at retail stores prompted the initiative. These crimes often involve organized groups that commit robberies and burglaries using intimidation tactics. The Sheriff’s Department expressed concern about how these actions affect the community by creating an unsafe shopping environment.

Operation Smash & Grab specifically targeted shopping districts in Rancho Cucamonga, Apple Valley, Hesperia, Victorville, and Chino Hills. Investigators used both conventional and unconventional methods to disrupt these criminal activities.

The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors has provided funds to support crime suppression efforts across the county. This funding aims to enhance law enforcement services addressing quality-of-life issues affecting local communities.

For more information or inquiries regarding this operation, individuals can contact the Public Affairs Division of the Gangs/Narcotics Division at (909) 387-3700.
