Investigation launched after inmate dies following hospitalization

On December 5, 2024, Brandon Charles, an inmate at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, California, reported feeling unwell to jail medical personnel. Following an evaluation, he was transported to a hospital for treatment of a serious medical condition. Despite receiving care, Charles' health worsened and he passed away on December 9, 2024.

The Sheriff's Specialized Investigations Division has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. Charles had been arrested by the San Bernardino Police Department on April 20, 2024, for possession of drugs and a firearm. During his initial medical screening upon incarceration, it was noted that he suffered from a serious medical condition and received ongoing medical care while in custody.
