The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, in collaboration with the California Highway Patrol and local law enforcement agencies, has launched an initiative to address retail theft during the holiday season. The operation, named "Operation Smash and Grab," aims to provide a safe shopping experience for citizens and business owners.
Building on last year's success, undercover personnel will be stationed at retail areas throughout the county. Loss prevention professionals in participating stores are tasked with contacting investigators directly to address crimes as they occur. Additionally, sheriff's department personnel will monitor surrounding parking lots using a vehicle equipped with an Automated License Reader to detect stolen vehicles and those associated with ongoing investigations.
The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s office plays a vital role by working closely with investigators to review reports, file cases, and manage follow-up investigations. This cooperation aims to streamline the process of bringing offenders to justice.
Statistics from Operation Smash and Grab over the past year reveal significant outcomes: 12 search warrants issued, 166 felony arrests, 360 misdemeanor arrests, and recovered property valued at $205,155.63.
District Attorney Jason Anderson emphasized their focus on community safety during the holiday season: “This holiday season, our office remains focused on ensuring the safety of our community and businesses. By working with law enforcement and businesses across the county, we will seek prosecution and accountability for individuals who engage in unlawful behavior such as retail theft crimes, buying or selling stolen property, or organized crime schemes at multiple locations.”
Sheriff-Coroner Shannon D. Dicus stated their commitment following Prop 36: “In San Bernardino County, our commitment is to protect our retail stores and small businesses impacted by theft. As a result of the passing of Prop 36, the Sheriff’s Department will no longer issue citations to offenders, and we will jail those who choose to commit retail theft. This commitment is our priority, ensuring the safety and security of the residents and retailers in our county.”
