On May 9, 2024, at 9:58 a.m., deputies from the Victorville Station responded to multiple calls regarding a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision on Mariposa Road. Callers reported that the pedestrian, later identified as Nicholas Contreras, was hit by a second vehicle as he continued to walk around after the first collision.

Upon arrival at the scene, deputies attempted to contact Contreras and discovered he was armed with a knife. Despite multiple commands from deputies for Contreras to drop the knife and get on the ground, he refused to comply. Instead, Contreras advanced towards the deputies which led to a lethal force encounter. As a result of this confrontation, Contreras was struck by gunfire. Despite lifesaving measures taken at the scene, he was pronounced deceased.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Specialized Investigation Division responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation.
