Dear Juniors and Parents/Guardians,

Cal Grant awards are free money provided by the State of California to help pay for the cost of college. Graduating high school seniors who meet academic, financial and eligibility requirements may qualify to receive a Cal Grant. For more information on Cal Grants, please visit the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) at csac.ca.gov.

To be considered for a Cal Grant entitlement award, both of the following requirements must be completed:

  1. A 2023–24 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at fafsa.gov or California Dream Act Application (CADAA) at dream.csac.ca.gov must be completed by students and parent/guardian between October 1, 2023 and March 2, 2024.

  2. High schools must submit a certified Grade Point Average (GPA) to the California Student Aid Commission by October 1, 2023. SBCUSD high schools will automatically submit GPAs for their class of 2023 in August or September 2023 (unless high schools receive a signed Cal Grant GPA Opt-out Form by the deadline below).

Cal Grant GPAs will be accepted by CSAC only if certified by a school electronically. The fastest and most secure way for a student to submit a Cal Grant GPA is for your high school to electronically upload the GPA directly to the CSAC system. California Education Code 69432.9 requires that all public schools electronically submit GPAs for all 12th grade students to CSAC. It also requires schools to notify 11th graders or their parents/guardians how to opt out of being automatically considered as a Cal Grant applicant. By completing the Cal Grant GPA Opt-out Form linked below, you realize that you are requesting that your son/daughter’s GPA not be submitted to CSAC, meaning they would not be considered for a Cal Grant award. (Award amounts)

If you wish to OPT-OUT from your student’s electronic submission please complete the Cal Grant GPA Opt-out Form (English opt-out form / Spanish opt-out form) and return it to your school’s counseling office no later than February 15, 2023. Please be aware that through opting out of the GPA submission you/your student are not being considered for a Cal Grant.
