Rep. Pete Aguilar helped pass the bipartisan Puerto Rico Status Act (H.R. 8393), a historic proposal that allows the people of Puerto Rico to determine their political status.

“The people of Puerto Rico are American citizens who should be able to make their own decisions about their political future,” said Rep. Aguilar. “Our bipartisan vote makes it clear that Congress stands with the people of Puerto Rico as they exercise their right to self-determination.”

The Puerto Rico Status Act establishes a pathway for Puerto Ricans to decide between three options for future political status: Independence, Sovereignty in Free Association with the United States and Statehood. This bill also provides a federally funded voter education campaign and establishes a timeline and review process for the Department of Justice to review voter education materials.

Rep. Aguilar is also a cosponsor of this legislation.

Rep. Aguilar was elected Chair of the House Democratic Caucus and is a member of the House Committee on Appropriations, the Committee on House Administration and the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the US Capitol.
