The Senate Committee on Revenue and Taxation has unanimously approved Senate Bill 23, also known as the "Home for Heroes Act," which was introduced by Sen. Suzette Valladares (R-Santa Clarita). The bill received a bipartisan vote of 5-0.

Sen. Valladares highlighted the financial challenges faced by disabled veterans in California, stating, "The cost of living in California continues to skyrocket and 100%-disabled veterans already shoulder the burden of ongoing, service-related medical expenses." She emphasized that the bill aims to address these affordability issues for veterans, describing it as "the least we can do to provide some badly needed economic relief."

The proposed legislation exempts primary residences of 100% disabled veterans and their spouses from property taxes. It is coauthored by 12 Republican members of the legislature and is intended to reduce financial burdens on those who have served the country.

"We’ve asked quite a lot of our 100%-disabled veterans already," Valladares remarked. "This bill is just a small token of our appreciation and will afford some of our most deserving veterans a modest but meaningful tax relief."

Following its approval by the committee, Senate Bill 23 will be reviewed next by the Senate Committee on Military and Veterans Affairs.
