The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department has announced the launch of the Blue Envelope Program in collaboration with local police chiefs, the Inland Regional Center, and the Autism Society – Inland Empire. This initiative aims to assist individuals with communication challenges or disabilities that are not immediately apparent by providing tools for effective interaction with law enforcement.
The program allows participants to present a Blue Envelope containing personal identification, emergency contact details, vehicle documents such as registration and insurance proof, and notes on how to communicate effectively with them. Additional items displaying the program's logo are also available for participants to indicate their involvement.
Participation in this program is free, voluntary, self-managed, and does not require registration. Sheriff-Coroner Shannon Dicus expressed enthusiasm about the initiative: “I am extremely excited to bring this program to San Bernardino County. I want all our community members to feel comfortable interacting with our deputies and if this helps bridge the communication gap, it’s a win-win situation.”
