Today, Senate Democrat leadership blocked a bill proposed by Senator Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh aimed at halting the state's gas tax to provide economic relief to California consumers. The Senate majority, consisting of 31 Democrats and 9 Republicans, convened an Extraordinary Session to address the high gas prices in California compared to the rest of the United States. However, they did not consider the proposed solutions.

Senator Ochoa Bogh emphasized the financial strain on families due to rising living costs, stating, "Our families across the state are facing unprecedented financial strain. From groceries to utilities, the cost of living continues to soar." She argued that suspending the gas tax for one year would offer immediate relief and ensure savings reach consumers directly.

The bill was also introduced in this session in the Assembly but was not given a hearing. Senator Ochoa Bogh criticized Senate Democrats for political posturing while Californians face high gas prices: "It’s shameful that Senate Democrats are engaging in political theatrics while California families continue to bear the brunt of the highest gas prices in the nation."

According to data from the Auto Club, California's current average price per gallon is $4.68 compared to a national average of $3.17.

Senator Ochoa Bogh concluded by urging action beyond empty gestures: “This suspension would have offered significant cost savings for Californians and created a ripple effect across various sectors that depend on transportation, production, and manufacturing within the state."
