The Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center (GHRC) in San Bernardino County will temporarily close for remodeling, following the approval of the final phase of the High Desert Detention Center (HDDC) by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors in July. This expansion has added 353 beds to the county's corrections capacity.
The GHRC will be remodeled to serve as a future re-entry facility for the entire corrections system. During this closure, affected staff will be reassigned to other county correctional facilities, which is expected to reduce overtime and address recruitment challenges faced by law enforcement statewide and nationally. The reassignment will also enable the Department to fully open all housing units at HDDC and enhance mental health and medical services for inmates with higher acuity needs.
"The new renovations should make GHRC a more flexible and robust re-entry facility. The Sheriff is excited to work with our county partners to help integrate homeless and mental health services into the re-entry process," said Shannon D. Dicus, Sheriff-Coroner. "These are exciting times within the corrections bureau of the Sheriff’s Department. I couldn’t be more proud of the staff and their innovative ideas to take us into the future and provide the best re-entry experience for our incarcerated people returning to the community. It is also my hope with the approval of the Board of Supervisors we can improve capacity for those experiencing homelessness in San Bernardino County."
