Hesperia police investigate fatal stabbing involving home intruder

On July 8, 2024, at approximately 9:20 p.m., deputies from the Hesperia Police Department responded to a reported stabbing at a home in the 15600 block of Sequoia Street. Upon arrival, they observed Daniel Cook performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on Ruben Castillo, who had sustained stab wounds. Castillo was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Detectives with the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division, Homicide Detail, assumed the investigation. According to their findings, Castillo arrived at the home where his ex-girlfriend lived and forced open a window. Inside the residence was Daniel Cook, who became involved in a physical altercation with Castillo. During this altercation, Castillo was stabbed. The involved parties claimed that Castillo’s actions led to a subsequent defense of life and property.

Investigators have informed the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office of the incident and will forward a full report for review.
