On July 5, 2024, at approximately 11:57 p.m., deputies at the West Valley Detention Center attempted to process Joel Valencia, a 30-year-old resident of Fontana, following his arrest by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Fontana Station for a domestic disturbance. During the intake process, Valencia exhibited erratic behavior and was found to have an elevated heart rate during a medical evaluation. He was subsequently transported to the hospital.

Upon arrival at the hospital on July 6, 2024, Valencia became combative and experienced a medical emergency. Despite efforts by hospital staff to administer lifesaving measures, Valencia was pronounced deceased.

The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division has taken over the investigation and will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
