Between May 31 and June 13, 2024, investigators from multiple agencies conducted retail theft operations throughout San Bernardino County. The coordinated effort, named Operation Smash & Grab, resulted in seven felony arrests, 12 misdemeanor arrests, and the recovery of $5,038 in property.

The operation involved the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department – Gangs/Narcotics Division, Rancho Cucamonga Station, San Bernardino County Probation Department, Homeland Security Investigations, California Highway Patrol, and the San Bernardino Police Department. These agencies targeted organized crews responsible for robberies, burglaries, shelf sweeps, and vandalism at retail stores.

"The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department became concerned with the rise in thefts at retail stores," a department spokesperson stated. "These violent criminals terrorize the citizens of San Bernardino County by utilizing intimidation tactics and a mob mentality that creates an unsafe and uncomfortable shopping environment for our residents."

Operation Smash & Grab focused on disrupting these activities in shopping districts across Rancho Cucamonga, Apple Valley, Hesperia, Victorville, and Chino Hills. Investigators employed both conventional and non-conventional methods to mitigate the impact of these criminal groups.

To support this initiative financially, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors authorized additional funds aimed at county-wide crime suppression. This funding aims to enhance law enforcement services addressing quality-of-life issues within local communities.
