Detectives from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Specialized Investigations Division are currently investigating the death of 23-year-old Eduardo Lopez, a resident of Hesperia, who passed away on April 25, 2024. According to the statement released by the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department, Lopez was arrested for vandalism and obstructing/resisting a peace officer and was initially held at the High Desert Detention Center before being transferred to the West Valley Detention Center.
The investigation into Lopez's death was initiated after he was found unresponsive in his cell on April 16, 2024, following an incident where he was observed harming himself on April 15, 2024. Despite efforts to save his life, Lopez's health continued to deteriorate, leading to his passing at Pomona Valley Hospital.
Detective Travis Kleveno of the Specialized Investigations Division is leading the investigation, with the cause of Lopez's death pending an autopsy by the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office.
