San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is investigating an incident that led to the death of a suspect following an assault on a deputy in Rancho Cucamonga. The events unfolded on March 19, 2024, at around 12:22 a.m. when deputies responded to a report involving Mohd Hijaz, a 32-year-old resident of Rancho Cucamonga.

According to the report, deputies were dispatched to the 10100 block of Foothill Boulevard after receiving information that Hijaz was acting erratically, attempting to open doors and setting off a fire alarm. Upon arrival, deputies found Hijaz seated in a bush, behaving incoherently. Despite attempts to offer assistance, Hijaz suddenly advanced towards the deputies, ignoring commands to stop. A confrontation ensued, during which Hijaz struck one of the deputies before being detained.

Following the altercation, Hijaz experienced a medical emergency and was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. The exact cause of his death is currently under investigation by detectives from the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division.

In a statement, Shannon D. Dicus of the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department urged anyone with information regarding the case to come forward and contact Detective Malcolm Page at (909) 890-4904.
