Stone Mountain Electrician Technician Student Selected for 2022 ‘Be The Change’ Scholarship

As part of an ongoing commitment to support racial equality, United Education Institute named Cristina Euell-Johnson as the recipient of the 2022 Be the Change Scholarship.

More than 200 students submitted essays highlighting moments when they witnessed or experienced social injustice and how are seeking to bring change to their community.  The winner will receive a full ride scholarship to the school. A committee of UEI administrators and staff selected Cristina as the recipient.

“I was really excited when I found out I was a finalist. I feel like my voice is being heard,” Cristina said. “That was the most important part of it all. The scholarship is great but the fact that it was heard by multiple people in several different states means the most to me.”

Cristina is an Electrician Technician student at the school’s Stone Mountain campus. She said she chose that program because she wants to show her daughters they are capable of anything.

The Be the Change Scholarship was created in 2020 to give UEI students a voice in the discussion of social justice, equality and human rights. Applicants were asked to write an essay about a time they witnessed or experienced social injustice and what they personally were doing to bring about change in their community

“I think it shows this is a company who will not just walk the walk but talk the talk,” said Kenyon Evans, Director of Education at the Stone Mountain campus. “Whatever is going on in the world, we are not going to turn a blind eye to it. We are going to talk about it and address it. I think it just shows the type of company we work for and the type of CEO we have, who is going to be at the front of these issues and these challenges and is going to stand with you and back that up with action, not just talk.”
