San Bernardino County broke a major record this year in the number of awards won from the National Association of Counties (NACo) for our innovative programs and services.

County departments won 82 NACo Achievement Awards beating an all-time high of 60 awards won in 2021. The awards honor innovative, effective county government programs that strengthen services for residents.

The County also won the most NACo Awards in the United States. Here is how San Bernardino County’s NACo awards ranked:

  1. San Bernardino County – 82
  2. Miami-Dade County, Fla. – 75
  3. Los Angeles County – 73
  4. San Diego County- 61
  5. Howard County, Md. – 43
  6. Maricopa County, Ariz. – 43
  7. Palm Beach County, Fla. – 31
  8. Montgomery County. Md. – 31
  9. Charlotte County, Fla. – 21
  10. Henrico County, Va. – 21
The Public Health Department and its staff, who continued battling the COVID-19 pandemic with groundbreaking programs that helped people get vaccinated, particularly our hard-to-reach populations, were awarded an astounding 33 awards for their own programs and programs in which they collaborated with other County departments.

The Department of Behavioral Health won 10 NACo Awards on their own and in collaboration with other County departments, providing extraordinary mental health services at a time of great need.

“Our County staff are the best in the country and I’m extremely proud of them because they work hard each and every day and think creatively on how we can better serve our residents,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Curt Hagman. “The last few years have been extremely difficult to navigate because of the pandemic but our employees stood strong and became even more nimble to find creative solutions.”

Since 2010, San Bernardino County has won 523 NACo Awards – an incredible achievement over the past 12 years.
