SBCUSD is getting ready to comply with a new law (SB328), known as the Portantino Rule. This new California law requires all classes to start no earlier than 8:00 a.m. for Middle Schools and 8:30 a.m. for High Schools. Complying with this law will impact all schools in SBCUSD. Additionally, school bell schedule changes must account for adding a significant number of busses and bus drivers to bring all students to school at the new times.
SBCUSD is considering the following solution for obeying this new law:
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - start school at 8:50 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. (bus riders will get on the bus early - some as early as 6:30 a.m. - and participate in Sunrise programs beginning at 7:30 a.m. Bus riders will also participate in after school CAPS programs and get back on the bus as late as 4:45 p.m.)
MIDDLE SCHOOL - start school at 9:00 a.m. and end at 3:31 p.m. (bus riders arrive at the start time for school)
HIGH SCHOOL - Start school at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3:35 p.m. (bus riders arrive at the start time for school)
SBCUSD wants to know how this plan impacts your family. Please respond to this survey by Sunday, March 13 to allow your voice to be heard on this important matter.
