The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department has announced the deployment of body scanner technology across its county jails. This initiative aims to enhance safety and security for both inmates and staff.

Since August 2024, the Sheriff's Department has been utilizing body scanners at the West Valley Detention Center, High Desert Detention Center, and Central Detention Center. Upon arrest, individuals entering these facilities undergo a non-invasive scan that produces a detailed image to reveal any hidden foreign objects or substances. Trained personnel review these images to identify potential contraband swiftly.

According to the department, "Body scanning technology is a proactive and highly effective approach to preventing drugs from entering the jail." It acts as both a deterrent and an interception tool, contributing to maintaining drug-free environments within these facilities.

Shannon D. Dicus, Sheriff-Coroner of the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department, oversees this implementation.
