Today, Senator Suzette Martinez Valladares from Santa Clarita introduced a legislative package focused on wildfire prevention and victim protection. The proposed laws aim to address the increasing threat of wildfires and provide stronger protections for affected individuals.
"California faces unprecedented challenges from wildfires, and it is our responsibility to do everything in our power to protect our communities and most vulnerable residents," stated Senator Valladares. "These new laws will help reduce wildfire risks, protect victims from opportunistic criminals, and ensure that our emergency responders can do their work without interference. With these bills, we are taking critical steps to build a safer, more resilient California."
The legislation comes as Southern California and Senate District 23 continue recovering from multiple wildfires.
The proposed laws include:
- Making impersonating emergency responders a felony: This bill allows prosecutors to charge those who impersonate police officers or firefighters during emergencies with a felony. It aims to prevent criminals from exploiting vulnerable residents during chaotic situations.
- Enhancements for burglary penalties during a state of emergency: This bill classifies burglary committed during emergencies as a felony offense. It seeks to deter criminal behavior by increasing penalties for those who steal from wildfire victims or exploit emergency situations.
- Power Line Safety Act: This act exempts power line infrastructure from the California Environmental Quality Act requirements for undergrounding lines. It aims to expedite moving power lines underground, reducing wildfire risks sparked by power equipment failures.
Senator Valladares continues prioritizing collaboration with lawmakers, first responders, and community leaders to enact measures preventing fires and addressing wildfire victims' needs.
