On December 2, 2024, Senator Suzette Martinez Valladares (R-Lancaster) introduced Senate Bill 23, known as the "Home for Heroes Act," aimed at supporting California's disabled veteran homeowners. This legislation seeks to exempt primary residences of veterans who are 100% disabled and their spouses from property taxes.
"This legislation is about honoring the courage and sacrifices of our disabled veterans and their families by providing them with the financial security they deserve," stated Valladares. She expressed pride in initiating this effort on her first day in office to support veterans and ensure they can remain in their homes.
The bill offers property tax exemptions for homes owned by veterans who are fully disabled due to service-related injuries or illnesses. It also extends these benefits to unmarried surviving spouses under specific conditions.
"This is more than just a tax policy—it’s a lifeline for veterans and their families who face housing insecurity,” Valladares added. She emphasized that California should lead in ensuring no veteran is left behind.
