Between May 17 and May 30, 2024, investigators from multiple agencies conducted retail theft operations throughout San Bernardino County. The agencies involved included the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department – Gangs/Narcotics Division, Rancho Cucamonga Station, San Bernardino County Probation Department, Homeland Security Investigations, California Highway Patrol, and the San Bernardino Police Department.

The coordinated effort resulted in eight felony arrests and 14 misdemeanor arrests. Additionally, authorities recovered $6,311 in stolen property.

The initiative stems from a concern that arose in November 2023 when the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department noted an increase in thefts at retail stores. These incidents often involved organized groups committing robberies, burglaries, shelve sweeps, and acts of vandalism. Such activities have contributed to an unsafe shopping environment for residents.

Operation Smash & Grab targeted shopping districts in Rancho Cucamonga, Apple Valley, Hesperia, Victorville, and Chino Hills. The goal was to disrupt and dismantle these organized theft crews using both conventional and non-conventional investigative methods.

Funding for this operation was authorized by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors to support county-wide crime suppression efforts. This funding aims to enhance law enforcement services related to quality-of-life issues within the community.
