Detectives are investigating the death of a 77-year-old man who was found unresponsive in his cell at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga. The incident occurred on January 22, 2024, around 5:50 p.m., during routine hourly safety checks conducted by deputies.

Upon discovering the inmate's condition, deputies and jail medical staff administered emergency medical care until personnel from the Rancho Cucamonga Fire Department arrived to continue lifesaving efforts. Despite these attempts, the inmate was pronounced dead.

The Specialized Investigations Division has taken over the investigation. Detectives have discovered that the deceased had been hospitalized in recent weeks due to multiple serious medical conditions. An autopsy will be performed at the Coroner’s Office to determine the cause of death.

The man had been arrested in May 2024 by officers from the Hesperia Sheriff's Station on charges of attempted murder and had remained incarcerated since then.

Authorities urge anyone with information about this case to contact Detective T. Loup or Sergeant J. Giles at the Specialized Investigations Division by calling 909-890-4904. Anonymous tips can also be submitted via We-Tip at 1-800-78-CRIME (27463) or online at wetip.com.
