Between October 26 and November 9, 2024, a targeted crime suppression initiative led by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department resulted in significant law enforcement achievements. The operation, known as "Operation Smash & Grab," was conducted with collaboration from multiple agencies including the Gangs/Narcotics Division, Rancho Cucamonga Station, San Bernardino County Probation Department, Homeland Security Investigations, California Highway Patrol, and the San Bernardino Police Department.

During this period, authorities arrested ten individuals on felony charges and made 22 misdemeanor arrests. The operation also successfully recovered $9,784 worth of property.

The rise in retail thefts prompted action from local authorities in November 2023. These crimes often involved organized groups engaging in robberies, burglaries, and other disruptive activities. According to the Sheriff's Department: "These violent criminals terrorize the citizens of San Bernardino County by utilizing intimidation tactics and a mob mentality that creates an unsafe and uncomfortable shopping environment for our residents."

"Operation Smash & Grab" concentrated its efforts on various shopping districts including Rancho Cucamonga, Apple Valley, Hesperia, Victorville, and Chino Hills. The goal was to dismantle organized retail theft crews using both conventional and non-conventional investigative methods.

To support these initiatives financially, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors allocated funds aimed at enhancing county-wide crime suppression efforts. This funding is intended to bolster law enforcement services focused on addressing quality-of-life issues affecting local communities.

For further information regarding this operation or specific cases involved (Case Nos.: 112411992 through 172412210), inquiries can be directed to the Public Affairs Division at (909) 387-3700.

Shannon D. Dicus serves as Sheriff-Coroner for the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department.
