The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department has addressed recent claims about the number of in-custody deaths at its correctional facilities. An advocacy group had alleged on social media that there were 20 such deaths this year, a figure the department refutes as inaccurate.
According to the department, there have been 10 in-custody deaths in 2024 across its four correctional facilities, which accommodate approximately 4,700 inmates daily and have processed 49,208 arrestees. Of these deaths, six occurred while the individuals were receiving medical care at local hospitals, while four took place within the facilities themselves.
Sheriff-Coroner Shannon D. Dicus emphasized that "the safety and security of all those who are incarcerated in the San Bernardino County correctional facilities are a top priority." The department adheres to guidelines set by the Board of State Community and Corrections for investigating such incidents. This involves reviews by homicide investigators, medical and mental health staff, and facility administration within a week of an incident.
The department also conducts internal reviews to assess whether personnel actions align with policy or if further training or equipment is necessary. Since Assembly Bill (AB) 109's implementation in 2011, which realigned prison populations leading to increased medical and mental health needs among inmates, San Bernardino County has enhanced services for its inmate population.
A federal court stipulation has removed oversight by the Prison Law Office (PLO), reflecting improvements made in inmate care. California law mandates public access to records related to in-custody death investigations while ensuring confidential information is redacted.
