On October 26, 2024, at approximately 3:03 p.m., deputies were called to Smarts Rancho Road, north of Cactus Flats and Big Bear, following the discovery of a human skull. The remains were found by an individual hunting in the area. Deputies confirmed that the skull was human.
The following day, October 27, 2024, investigators from the Coroner’s Division and Specialized Investigations Division searched the site further and uncovered additional remains. An autopsy is planned to establish both the identity of the deceased and determine how they died.
