On September 20, 2024, at approximately 4:04 p.m., deputies from the Apple Valley station responded to a shooting incident at an automotive repair center located in the 13600 block of Quinnault Road. Upon arrival, they encountered Leon Sanchez, who was armed with a handgun and was detained without incident.
The victims were identified as Frank Portillo, a 31-year-old resident of Hesperia, and Joshua Augsburger, a 44-year-old resident of Apple Valley. Both men had sustained gunshot wounds. Despite lifesaving efforts, Portillo was pronounced dead at the scene. Augsburger was transported to a trauma center where he remains in critical condition.
Detectives from the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division, Homicide Detail, took over the investigation. According to their findings, Portillo and Augsburger confronted Sanchez upon arriving at the location. Witnesses reported hearing Portillo threaten Sanchez before shots were fired by Sanchez, striking both men.
Sanchez holds a valid San Bernardino County Carry Concealed Firearm permit. The case is under ongoing investigation and will be reviewed by the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office.
