Between August 9 and August 22, 2024, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Gangs/Narcotics Division and Rancho Cucamonga Station, along with the San Bernardino County Probation Department, Homeland Security Investigations, California Highway Patrol, and the San Bernardino Police Department conducted a retail theft operation throughout San Bernardino County.

During the operation, investigators made eight felony arrests and 26 misdemeanor arrests, recovering $9,693 in property.

In November 2023, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department expressed concern over rising thefts at retail stores involving organized crews conspiring to commit robberies, burglaries, shelf sweeps, and vandalism. These criminals have been described as using intimidation tactics and mob mentality to create an unsafe shopping environment for residents.

Operation Smash & Grab targeted the Rancho Cucamonga, Apple Valley, Hesperia, Victorville, and Chino Hills shopping districts. The operation aimed to disrupt and dismantle these retail theft crews using both conventional and non-conventional investigative methods.

The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors authorized funds to assist with county-wide crime suppression. This funding aims to provide additional resources to the Sheriff’s Department for increased law enforcement services addressing quality-of-life issues affecting local communities.
