On August 3, 2024, at 9:34 p.m., deputies from the Rancho Cucamonga Station responded to a report of a man with a gun at Vons located at 8778 19th Street. Upon arrival, witnesses informed the deputies that the suspect had moved across the street near Walgreens Pharmacy.

The deputies encountered the suspect, identified as Davonte Sykes, a 31-year-old resident of Los Angeles, armed with a handgun. Sykes fired upon the deputy leading to the first Lethal Force Encounter (LFE). The confrontation continued into Sprouts Farmer’s Market where a second LFE occurred. Sykes was struck by gunfire and subsequently transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

During this incident, a second deputy sustained a superficial wound and was taken to the hospital but released shortly after.

The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division has taken over the investigation. Detectives believe Sykes may have been involved in another shooting in Upland about an hour before this incident in Rancho Cucamonga.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Specialized Investigations Division at 909-890-4904. Callers wishing to remain anonymous can contact We-Tip at 1-800-78-CRIME (27463).
