On July 27, 2024, deputies from the Highland Sheriff’s Station responded to a report of shots fired at 27141 Baseline Street in Highland. Upon arrival, they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Both men were transported to a local hospital but were pronounced deceased despite lifesaving efforts.
The victims were identified as Aaron Harris, a 37-year-old resident of Highland, and Jonathan McConnell, a 38-year-old resident of Corona. Detectives with the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division, Homicide Detail, took over the investigation.
According to investigators, the incident began with a hit-and-run traffic collision on the 210 Freeway. McConnell was riding a motorcycle when he split lanes and collided with Harris's sedan, which was occupied by Harris and his two children aged two and five.
Harris followed McConnell off the freeway to a parking lot at 27141 Baseline Street. There, McConnell met several acquaintances in front of Joy’s Lounge. Harris stopped his vehicle and shouted threats at McConnell. When McConnell approached Harris's vehicle, Harris fired at him; McConnell returned fire. An adult male at the scene suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound to his hand. The children and others present were unharmed.
