On May 15, 2024, deputies from the Hesperia Station responded to a theft and robbery report at Stater Bros. Market located at 15757 Main Street in Hesperia. The suspect, identified as Ginny Nicholson, a 25-year-old resident of Victorville, entered the store and concealed alcohol inside a bag. When a store employee attempted to stop her, Nicholson assaulted the employee before fleeing the scene. The employee was later transported to a local hospital and treated for a broken nose and lacerations.

The following day, investigators from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Gangs/Narcotics Division assigned to Retail Theft took over the investigation. Through their efforts, Nicholson was identified as the suspect, leading to the issuance of a Ramey Warrant for her arrest.

On May 21, 2024, Retail Theft investigators arrested Nicholson on charges of robbery and assault. She was subsequently booked at the High Desert Detention Center with bail set at $50,000.

In response to rising retail thefts involving organized crews since November 2023, which have included robberies, burglaries, shelf sweeps, and vandalism across San Bernardino County shopping districts such as Rancho Cucamonga, Apple Valley, Hesperia, Victorville, and Chino Hills; Operation SMASH & Grab was initiated by law enforcement agencies. This operation aims to disrupt these criminal activities through both conventional and non-conventional investigative methods.

The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors has allocated additional funds for county-wide crime suppression efforts aimed at improving quality-of-life issues affecting local communities by enhancing law enforcement services provided by the Sheriff's Department.
