Initially believed to be human, the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division assumed responsibility for the investigation.

However, an update provided on May 22, 2024, by the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office clarified that upon further examination, the skeletal remains were determined not to be human.

The recovered remains included various bones and were initially set to undergo examination and autopsy to determine identity and cause of death. The investigation has since been redirected based on these new findings.
