The San Bernardino Valley College men's basketball team opened the second half on an 8-0 run, opening up a 10-point lead that they would never lose again, as the Wolverines opened the 2022-23 season with an 88-58 victory over Compton College in the Alvin Hunter Classic.
The two teams traded the lead in the first half, with SBVC leading by two at the break. But four different Wolverines scored to start the second half, and the SBVC defense clamped down on the Tartars, limiting them to only 30.8 percent shooting in the second half.
All five of the Wolverines' starters finished the game in double figures, with Sebastian Mendoza leading all scorers with 22 points. Armon Muldrew finished with 17, while Chester Makoi and Aamari Smith each had 15. Dominique Daniels rounded out the starting five with 12 points.
SBVC ended the game making 50 percent of its shots from the field, while Compton struggled, finishing the game making only 30.9 percent of its shots.
The Wolverines advance to Saturday's second round against East Los Angeles College at 6 p.m.
