The San Bernardino Valley College women's volleyball team honored its sophomores Friday evening, as the team closed out the home portion of its 2022 schedule with a three-set victory over Victor Valley College.
The game, moved to SBVC due to gym damage at Victor Valley, was the second time in two weeks the two teams met in San Bernardino. SBVC ended winning 26-24, 25-14, 25-14.
Victor Valley opened the match strong, opening a quick 4-0 lead, before sophomore Abigail Hildebrand's kill sent fellow sophomore Kenia Castillo to the service line. Castillo, the Wolverines' libero, ran off six straight points - including three aces - to turn the tide back SBVC's way. But Victor Valley would not go down easily in the first set, rallying back to take a 24-22 lead late. But a mistake on game point gave the ball back to the Wolverines, sending Peyton Mendoza to the service line. A ckill from Cara Ceballos tied the game, and Mendoza served an ace to give the Wolverines a set point opportunity, which they converted on a Victor Valley passing error.
The Wolverines cruised from there to pick up the win.
Maddie Kettle led the offensive attack for SBVC with 12 kills, while Ceballos and Hildebrand each finished with seven. Ceballos also pitched in with three aces and 13 digs. Castillo ended the match with four aces and 32 digs on defense. And Emy Tuttle-Kamon added four kills, three aces and 17 assists.
