In their final race before beginning championship season, the San Bernardino Valley College men's cross country team got a boost, winning the team championship at the Chaffey Invitational on Saturday.
The Wolverines placed six runners in the top 10, finishing with 22 points to best the hosts, who finished second.
"The team is coming together," coach Jim Ratigan said. "We had one runner out sick, but others stepped up to help us win the team title."
Jake Caliva led the way for SBVC, finishing second with a time of 22 minutes, 4.2 seconds. Dennis Cordova finished fourth, stopping the clock on the four-mile course at 22:22.9. Chris Valderrama crossed at 22:56.2 for sixth, while Fercis Torres was seventh at 23:12.5. Rounding out the top six were Arian Mayorga at ninth (23:42.1) and John Mireles at tenth (24:05.2).
The Wolverines will now focus on preparing for the upcoming championship season of races, starting with the Inland Empire Athletic Conference championships Oct. 28, followed by the Southern California Regional Final on Nov. 4.
"We will continue to work hard and strive to reach the state championships in Fresno again," Ratigan said.
