For every team, the ultimate goal is to win a championship. And players often are asked to put aside their personal pride to help the team reach that goal. But to get as far as the San Bernardino Valley College men’s basketball team did in 2021-22, it takes strong play by individuals to help the team strive for that goal.
And because of their hard work, and their trip to the State Elite Eight, several members of the SBVC men's team earned postseason honors for their individual play in the 2021-22 season.
Atop that list was guard Dominique Daniels. The freshman was named the Southern California Player of the Year by the California Community College Men’s Basketball Coaches Association for his play this season. He finished the regular season averaging 22.1 points and five assists per game for the Wolverines. Daniels was also named the player of the year in the Inland Empire Athletic Conference. In the 16 conference games, he averaged 24.4 points and 5.9 assists per game, leading SBVC to its first IEAC championship.
Daniels was not alone in being honored for their play in the IEAC season. Sophomore guard Brandon Thompson and freshman guard Armon Muldrew were named to the conference’s first team. Thompson averaged 14.3 points per game, while making 49.3 percent of his shots in conference play (including 48.3 percent from three-point range). Muldrew averaged 15.2 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game during IEAC play.
On the IEAC second team was sophomore Anthony Bell. The guard made 61.3 percent of his shots from the field during conference play and averaged 5.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game.
Guard Kendall Collins earned honorable mention honors for his work coming off the bench. Collins averaged 21.9 minutes per game in conference play, averaging 7.8 points and five assists per game.
Head coach Quincy Brewer was named the conference coach of the year. SBVC finished atop the IEAC with a 14-2 record this season. Overall, the Wolverines finished the season 25-6, and were undefeated at home, going 15-0 inside the Wolverines’ Den.
