A San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy was killed Monday after being shot by a suspect in Rancho Cucamonga, authorities said.
Deputies responded to a report of a man with a gun threatening a woman at a residence on the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive around 12:37 p.m. Upon arrival, deputies were immediately fired upon. Deputy Andrew Nunez, 28, was struck by gunfire and airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The suspect fled the scene and led law enforcement officers from multiple agencies on an eastbound pursuit along the 210 Freeway. According to officials, the suspect reached speeds exceeding 150 mph before a narcotics deputy in an unmarked sheriff’s vehicle used a pursuit intervention technique and collided with the suspect near Campus Avenue, ending the chase. The suspect was taken to the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. Authorities stated that he will be booked for murder once medically cleared.
