The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department announced on April 8 that a targeted crime suppression effort, Operation Smash & Grab, led to multiple arrests and the recovery of stolen property in Rancho Cucamonga between March 21 and April 3.
The operation is part of ongoing efforts to address organized retail theft, which has impacted shopping corridors in the county. Law enforcement agencies collaborated to combat these crimes, aiming to improve safety for residents and businesses.
During the recent operation, investigators made two misdemeanor arrests, three felony arrests, and recovered $1,864 worth of property. The department said it became concerned about an increase in retail store thefts involving organized groups using intimidation tactics. “These violent criminals terrorize the citizens of San Bernardino County by utilizing intimidation tactics and a mob mentality that creates an unsafe and uncomfortable shopping environment for our residents,” according to the statement.
Operation Smash & Grab targets several shopping districts across Rancho Cucamonga, Apple Valley, Hesperia, Victorville, and Chino Hills using various investigative methods. Funding for these operations was authorized by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors to support county-wide crime suppression initiatives.
Recent legal changes have also influenced law enforcement strategies. Proposition 36—”The Homelessness, Drug Addiction and Theft Reduction Act”—was passed by California voters on November 5, 2024. The measure took effect December 18 that year and introduced new penalties related to theft offenses; one arrest during this operation was made under its provisions.
