On March 18, 2025, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department provided an update on a criminal case involving the death of a 10-year-old child in Rancho Cucamonga due to fentanyl exposure.

The incident took place in December 2024 when deputies responded to a call about an unresponsive child at a residence on Arrow Route. Despite efforts to save him, the child, identified as Nathaniel Castro Mendoza, was pronounced dead. The Coroner Division later determined that his death was caused by toxicity from fentanyl and xylazine.

The Overdose Response Team from the department’s Gang/Narcotics Division led the investigation. Detectives found that Christina Veronica Alvarez possessed and stored fentanyl at the location where the overdose occurred. Alvarez was arrested and charged with felony child endangerment resulting in death under California Penal Code section 273a(a). The District Attorney’s Office filed charges and issued a warrant for her arrest. She was taken into custody on March 14, 2025, with bail set at $100,000.

During court proceedings, Alvarez’s defense requested consideration for mental health diversion—a legal process in California allowing eligible defendants with qualifying mental health disorders to receive treatment instead of traditional prosecution if statutory criteria are met. After reviewing evaluations and case circumstances on January 9, 2026, the court denied this request. The criminal case will proceed through regular judicial channels.

In a statement, the department said: “The Sheriff’s Department recognizes the profound impact this case has had on the victim’s family and the community. Crimes involving fentanyl, particularly those that endanger children, remain a significant public safety concern. This investigation was conducted thoroughly and submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for review and prosecution.”

They added: “The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department remains committed to aggressively investigating cases involving controlled substances and child endangerment and will continue working with prosecutorial and community partners to address the dangers posed by fentanyl.”

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department serves over 2.1 million residents across 15 patrol stations within what is described as the largest county in contiguous United States. Its law enforcement services include specialized divisions such as aviation and patrol official website. Shannon D. Dicus serves as sheriff-coroner for the department official website. The department emphasizes integrity and leadership among its core values while focusing on professional responses to community needs.
