Between June 2 and June 8, 2025, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department conducted a targeted crime suppression operation named “Operation Consequences.” This initiative involved investigators from the Gangs/Narcotics Division, deputies from patrol stations, and personnel from partnering agencies. The operation took place in various locations including San Bernardino and Yucaipa.

During this period, law enforcement officials contacted gang members and individuals prohibited from possessing firearms. The operation resulted in the seizure of 17 firearms, three of which were ghost guns. Additionally, suspected methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin were confiscated. Authorities made a total of 14 felony arrests and five misdemeanor arrests.

Proposition 36, titled “The Homelessness, Drug Addiction and Theft Reduction Act,” was passed by California voters on November 5, 2024. It took effect on December 18, 2024. This proposition reforms laws that have been linked to increasing homelessness, drug addiction, and theft. Proposition 36 includes new Penal and Health and Safety Codes that can be applied during arrests when appropriate. These charges may carry enhanced sentencing and prevent offenders from being released before their court appearance. Two arrests during the operation were related to Proposition 36.

The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors has authorized funds for county-wide crime suppression efforts to enhance law enforcement services related to quality-of-life issues affecting local communities.

Operation Consequences aims to conduct targeted crime suppression operations in the High Desert area and around San Bernardino city over several months. The operation involves personnel from multiple divisions including the Sheriff’s Gangs/Narcotics Division, Specialized Enforcement Division, patrol stations as well as agencies like California Highway Patrol, San Bernardino Police Department, San Bernardino County Probation, United States Marshals Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force, and Department of Homeland Security Investigations. The goal is to curb violent crime by disrupting criminal street gangs and addressing illegal firearm activities.
