On February 24, 2025, at approximately 12:41 a.m., an incident involving a Victorville man led to an in-custody death investigation. The event unfolded at a Chevron station located on Hesperia Road in Victorville when a deputy from the Victorville Sheriff’s Station responded to a disturbance call.

The individual involved was identified as Roman Huerta, a 28-year-old transient in Victorville. Huerta was reportedly under the influence of a controlled substance and was causing disturbances inside the store. During the interaction with law enforcement, Huerta resisted detention by pushing the deputy and attempting to flee on foot. A brief pursuit followed, during which Huerta was tased and subsequently taken into custody.

Once inside the patrol vehicle, Huerta remained combative and uncooperative with both deputies and medical staff when transported to Victor Valley Global Medical Center for pre-booking clearance. At some point during this process, Huerta became unresponsive. Despite efforts to save his life, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division has taken over the investigation of this case. An autopsy is planned to determine the exact cause of death.
