Inmate dies; investigation launched after incident at Central Detention Center

On June 22, 2025, an in-custody death investigation was initiated following the discovery of an unresponsive inmate at the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino. The inmate, identified as Willie Toa, a 30-year-old resident of Redlands, was found by deputies at approximately 4:54 a.m.

Deputies and jail medical staff attempted to revive Toa using medical aid and Narcan. Despite these efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division has taken over the investigation to determine the cause and manner of death through an autopsy.

Toa had been arrested on June 21 by the Redlands Police Department on charges of criminal threats and domestic battery. He was awaiting a court hearing at the time of his death.
