On May 8, 2025, deputies at the West Valley Detention Center noticed inmate Phillip Lester having difficulty walking and breathing. They assisted him to a location within the housing unit for medical evaluation. During this time, an ambulance was called, and Lester was taken to a hospital where he was admitted with serious illnesses.

Phillip Lester, aged 66 and a resident of Moreno Valley, had turned himself in on March 17, 2025, due to an assault warrant. He remained in custody until his death on May 11, 2025. The Specialized Investigations Division has taken over the investigation following his passing.
