In-custody death investigation underway following detainee’s hospital demise

On April 30, 2025, deputies at the West Valley Detention Center discovered Jabari Betts experiencing a medical emergency in his cell. Medical staff from the jail and personnel from the Rancho Cucamonga Fire Department responded as Betts’ condition worsened. Despite efforts to resuscitate him with CPR, Betts was transported to a hospital for treatment of a pre-existing medical issue.

Betts, aged 47 and identified as transient from Victorville, was pronounced dead on May 1, 2025, at approximately 5:34 a.m. The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division has taken over the investigation into his death.

Previously, Betts had been arrested on April 24, 2025, at the Victor Valley Global Medical Center after allegedly threatening security staff. Deputies ensured he received medical clearance before booking him into custody.
