The Homeless Outreach Proactive Enforcement (H.O.P.E.) Team executed “Operation Shelter Me” in Yucaipa and its surrounding communities, as part of an ongoing effort to offer support services to the homeless. Collaborating with the San Bernardino County Probation Department and the Department of Aging and Adult Services, the operation focused on individuals with significant mental illnesses to facilitate access to medical, mental health services, and housing.
During the operation, the H.O.P.E. Team identified 16 people experiencing homelessness, with 13 receiving referrals to assistance programs. One adult male was hospitalized for mental health and substance abuse treatment due to his inability to meet basic life-sustaining needs. “The adult male subject was identified as experiencing a significant mental health crisis and substance abuse issues,” according to the statement. “His condition would have been life threatening if he were left untreated and unhoused.”
The initiative aligns with San Bernardino County’s commitment to Laura’s Law, or Assisted Outpatient Treatment, although no candidates for AOT were found during this operation. The H.O.P.E. Team plans to continue similar efforts countywide over the next year, under a special funding initiative approved by the County Board of Supervisors aimed at tackling homelessness and mental health issues.
Sheriff-Coroner Shannon D. Dicus emphasized the ongoing nature of these efforts, asking community members aware of individuals needing services to contact the H.O.P.E. Team.
